Switchgrass can be used as an ornamental grass.  There is no need to cut it back in the winter.  Leave it for birds to eat the seeds and for small mammals to take cover.  This was a dominate plant the tallgrass prairie that used to cover most of the middle part of the continent.  It also does well in New England and can be found in meadows and along roadsides.  It will reseed readily so may not be suited to a small garden or space.
