Bayberry shrubs have aromatic foliage that is edible. The wax from the berries was traditionally used to make candles. This shrub grows well in dry sandy, gravelly soils, even a hellstrip, or will make a nice hedge.
Male and female plants are required to make fruit. It is not possible to tell the sex of a plant until it is several years old, so it is suggested to have at least three if you want berries.
