Snakeroot gets a bad wrap. It caused the death of Abraham Lincoln's mother. You see, if cows eat snakeroot a compound called tremetol gets into their milk. Tremetol is a toxic alcohol that causes "milk sickness" and can result in death. Moral of the story, don't eat snakeroot. It is toxic to people and pets, so if you have a pet that likes to munch in your garden, this may not be the plant for you. The upside is snakeroot is usually avoided by deer and bunnies because of its toxicity.
Despite all of this, snakeroot is a beautiful plant that is loved by pollinators. It blooms late in the season with flowers sometimes lasting past the first frost. This is a good plant for the shady part of your garden.
